Trends in EV Charging Infrastructure Development in Vietnam and the Role of BTB Electric Equipment
Amid the booming electric vehicle (EV) movement in Vietnam, the demand for sustainable and safe EV charging infrastructure has become more urgent than ever. This presents both opportunities and challenges for investors and high-quality electrical equipment providers like BTB Electric.
Current Status of EV Charging Infrastructure in Vietnam
Compared to global EV technology leaders such as the U.S., China, and regional countries like Thailand and Singapore, Vietnam entered the EV market relatively late. It wasn’t until December 2021 that VinFast pioneered the era of smart electric cars. Since then, VinFast and its subsidiary V-Green have been actively expanding the EV charging network to drive Vietnam’s green transition.
According to planning data, VinFast alone has installed 150,000 charging ports across 34 provinces and cities, covering 125 national highways with an average distance of 65 km between stations—soon to be shortened to 50 km. Based on the number of charging ports relative to land area and population, Vietnam is currently surpassing both China and the U.S. in charging infrastructure density.
A World Bank report predicts that EVs could replace internal combustion engine vehicles by 2035. To meet the target of 1 million EVs by 2030, Vietnam would need at least 50,000 charging stations with 800,000 charging ports. By 2050, that number would rise to 6 million.
However, current EV charging infrastructure in Vietnam faces several problems, such as uneven distribution—mainly concentrated in major urban areas and along major highways—while mountainous and rural areas remain underserved.
Additionally, many charging stations cannot handle peak-hour loads, leading to issues such as mid-charge disconnections or vehicle incompatibility. Lack of standardization in charging connectors and protocols also hinders compatibility between domestic stations and imported EV models.
The current scale and quality of charging stations still fall short of actual demand
To promote EV adoption, the government is considering incentives such as tax breaks, financial support, electricity pricing regulations for public stations, and mandatory charging station installation in new constructions.
Besides VinFast, other players like Eboost, EV One, EverCharge, EVG, Charge Plus, DatCharge, Rabbit EVC, SolarEV, Autel, EVN, and PV Power have entered the market, creating notable trends:
- Encouraging franchised charging station models at hotels, parking lots, rest stops, gas stations, and supermarkets to eliminate infrastructure gaps in smaller cities.
- Promoting private home wallbox charger installation to reduce public charging station load.
- Developing high-power fast-charging stations to shorten charging times and serve long-distance travel.
- Integrating smart technologies like remote charging scheduling and cashless payments via mobile apps.
- Expanding solar-powered stations using renewable energy to ease grid pressure.
These trends align with global infrastructure development and present significant opportunities and challenges for EV manufacturers and equipment suppliers aiming to standardize, secure, and scale the charging network.
BTB Electric’s Role in Vietnam’s EV Charging Infrastructure
As EV adoption accelerates in Vietnam, demand for safe, efficient, and reliable charging stations has never been higher—especially as the country faces challenges in standardizing charging station quality. Rapid electrification of transport poses several infrastructure challenges:
- Electrical Safety: Fast and high-power charging (30kW to 250kW or more) poses risks of overloads, short circuits, and leakage currents, which threaten both user and equipment safety.
- Power Quality: Fast DC chargers typically generate harmonics—electrical noise that degrades power quality, wastes energy, and affects the national grid.
- Operational Efficiency: How can investors reduce station operating costs while optimizing power usage?
Choosing European-standard equipment from trusted brands like BTB Electric is a smart solution to protect charging systems while optimizing energy use and reducing operating expenses.
Each charging station contains an electrical cabinet—the “brain” of the system—where BTB Electric components play a crucial role in control and protection.
Switching Devices
BTB Electric offers MCBs, MCCBs, RCBOs, and ACBs suitable for EV charging stations.
- MCBs protect small control circuits, auxiliary power lines, and lighting circuits from overloads and short circuits.
- MCCBs are critical for protecting costly power converters inside EV charging cabinets.
- RCBOs are ideal when protection from overload, earth leakage, and electric shock is needed.
- ACBs act as the main protection device for large-scale charging stations, ensuring stability for entire charging clusters.

BTB Electric: Supporting EV Infrastructure Development
To avoid issues like connector incompatibility and non-standard installations, global standards such as IEC have been introduced to improve EV charging system safety and reliability. Standards such as:
- IEC 61851 – Charging system requirements
- IEC 62196 – Plugs, sockets, vehicle connectors
- IEEE 519 – Harmonic limits for power quality
… are now essential benchmarks for equipment suppliers.
At BTB Electric, compliance with IEC/EN standards is mandatory across all product lines—switching devices, control equipment, and power quality components. Our European-standard equipment ensures:
- Full protection of charging cabinets and users under all conditions.
- Optimized investment for station owners through devices that reduce energy loss and operating costs, backed by competitive and transparent pricing.
- Easy scalability for personal wallbox charging setups with diverse product options.
- Seamless integration of BTB devices with other charging station systems.
- Improved reliability and lifespan of the entire charging infrastructure.
BTB Electric’s presence in EV charging stations goes beyond simply supplying electrical components.
