Typical type tests for RCBO according to IEC 61009-1
An RCBO (Residual Current Circuit Breaker with Overcurrent protection) is an electrical safety device that integrates both residual current protection and overcurrent protection. It combines the functions of an RCCB and an MCB into a single unit. RCBOs protect people from electric shock hazards and safeguard equipment from overloads and short circuits. They are commonly installed on individual electrical circuits in residential, commercial, and industrial applications. The main advantages of RCBOs include space-saving design, enhanced safety, and ease in identifying fault locations.
Standards for RCBO Design and Testing
The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has issued the IEC 61009-1 standard for RCBOs. This standard outlines the general requirements for residual current-operated circuit breakers with integrated overcurrent protection used in AC circuits for residential and similar purposes. It specifies the design, performance, safety, and testing conditions to ensure the RCBO functions reliably when residual current, overload, or short-circuit events occur. IEC 61009-1 also includes test methods covering electrical, mechanical, and thermal aspects to assess the durability and long-term stability of RCBOs.
Typical Test Items
IEC 61009-1 includes 21 typical test items, such as:
- Durability of marking
- Reliability of screws, components, and current-carrying connections
- Reliability of terminals for external conductors
- Protection against electric shock
- Dielectric properties
- Temperature rise
- Operating characteristics
- Mechanical and electrical endurance
- Positive contact indication mechanism
- Short-circuit performance
- Resistance to mechanical shock and impact
- Heat resistance
- Abnormal heat and fire resistance
- Test button operation at rated voltage limits
- RCBO performance under supply voltage faults (as per clause 4.1.2.1)
- Non-tripping limits under overcurrent conditions
- Resistance to unwanted tripping due to inrush currents
- Insulation resistance to impulse voltage
- Performance under earth fault currents with DC components
- Overall reliability
- Aging of electronic components
RCBOs combine the functions of RCCBs and MCBs in one compact unit, and therefore, IEC 61009-1 specifies 21 key test items to ensure their quality and safety. With the ability to protect both equipment and people from electrical hazards, it is crucial to choose RCBOs that have successfully passed stringent tests in reputable laboratories.
The MO63 RCBO from BTB Electric has passed all required tests conducted by TÜV Rheinland, providing customers with confidence in its safety and reliability.
