Motor Control Center – Specifications, Structure and Application
Motor Control Center (MCC) is a series of industrial cabinets that are widely used in electrical systems using large power motors. The MCC cabinet is likened to a “conductor” that flexibly and efficiently controls motors and pumps,… to help increase operational efficiency. The following article from BTB Electric will help you understand more about MCC cabinets: specifications, construction, applications and start-up methods.
Definition of Motor Control Center
MCC (Motor Control Center) electrical cabinet is a centrally controlled industrial electrical cabinet, which is responsible for controlling the motor in the electrical system. This series of electrical cabinets are used to distribute motor power, control speed, adjust rotation, and protect high-power motors.
Motor Control Center Specifications and Construction
Here are the basic specifications of Motor Control Center:
- Applicable Standard: IEC 60439-1, IEC 60529
- Rated Voltage: 220 – 230 VAC / 380 – 415 VAC
- Cut-off current level: 6kA – 50kA
- Frequency: 50Hz/60Hz
- Maximum Current: 1200A
- Motor Power: 1500W – 630000W
- Protection Grade (IP): IP43 – IP55
- Maximum Heat Rise: 50 degrees Celsius
The structure of the MCC cabinet has 2 parts: the cabinet shell and the internal equipment:
- Cabinet cover: Made from powder-coated aluminum alloy, in the form of a box block, divided into multiple compartments vertically. The compartments are divided into low-voltage control (230V – 1000V motor) and high-voltage control (1000V – 15kV motor).
- Devices: Starters (inverters, soft starts, direct-start inverters, hard starts, or transformers), central controllers, MCCBs, MCBs, contactors, thermal relays,… The devices are linked to a safety interlock system, minimizing risks during operation or maintenance.
MCC control cabinet startup methods
Common MCC cabinet boot methods are hard start, soft start, and inverter.
Hard starter (star-delta starter)
Hard starter is a method that is often applied to small power motors with star-delta circuit connections. The advantages of this type of MCC cabinet starter are low cost, easy to check the connection wires, easy to install and repair. But this starting method has some disadvantages: it is only used for small motors of less than 10kW, limited starting range, and small starting current.
Soft Starter
The soft starter method applies to engines with medium to large operating power. There are many ways to implement this method of start-up, mainly AC pressurization and frequency conversion.
The advantage of soft starter is that it is easy to adjust with a wide adjustment range and quite stable operation, easy to adjust the engine speed, and moderate investment cost. The minus point is that the MCC cabinet uses soft start, which is difficult to design and maintain, the current is difficult to adjust, and it is easy to make errors when adjusting.
Starter using the inverter
The Motor Control Center uses an inverter to operate by changing the current frequency through the motor winding, thereby helping to control the motor speed continuously throughout the operation of the device.
The advantages of this starting method are that it saves energy, makes the most of the working power, protects the motor when overloaded, loses phase or changes in voltage suddenly, and prolongs the life of the motor.
Benefits of Operating Motor Control Center
Installing and operating Motor Control Center helps improve work efficiency and operating costs for applications that require close monitoring of many motors in the system. Projects that use MCC cabinet such as factories will further optimize space and equipment investment costs. On the other hand, this series of electrical cabinets has a simple design, easy to disassemble, maintain, maintain and flexibly expand capacity when required.
Thanks to a variety of start-up methods such as star-triangle start, inverter, soft start,.. but the design and installation of MCC cabinet are quite fast, meeting the needs of the user unit. The design of connecting this control cabinet is minimalist, space-saving. The system is ready to install additional equipment when needed. The motor and equipment placed in the MCC cabinet limit the harm from the corrosive environment, increasing the operating life. Along with that, the use of the MCC cabinet makes it easy for the operator to control the entire motor system, including the motor that is not working.
Practical Applications of Motor Control Center
The main function of the MCC cabinet is to start, monitor and change the rotation characteristics of the motor. The application of Motor Control Center is to control one or more high-power motors in factories, production workshops, pepper pumping stations, buildings, buildings, hospitals, airports,… More specifically, this type of cabinet controls the system of domestic pumps, booster pumps, fountains, ventilation fans, smoke exhaust fans,…
